asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many indictable offences were committed by people aged 16 or 17 in the latest year for which figures are available, and how many of these offenders were: (a) at school (b) in full-time employment (c) in part-time employment (d) taking part in youth training (e) receiving income support under the severe hardship provisions.

The data available relate to the number of "known" offenders—that is persons who have been found guilty or cautioned. Information on indictable offences by age is published annually in the Command PaperCriminal Statistics England and Wales, Table 5.23. A copy of the 1991 volume, published on 18th February 1993, is available in the Library. Nineteen ninety two data will not be available until autumn 1993.

Information as to whether the offender is a student, in employment or otherwise is not collected centrally.
