HL Deb 15 March 1993 vol 543 c69WA
The Earl of Selkirk

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have succeeded in establishing an eight-hour limit for the journeys transporting animals to Europe for slaughter, and whether this limit has now been agreed.

Earl Howe

Directive 91/628 on the protection of animals during transport is a framework directive and the Commission were due last year to make further proposals for a number of specific safeguards to protect animals during transport. In the absence of Community decisions in these areas national rules are permitted. The Welfare of Animals during Transport Order 1992 implements the directive and the order came into force on 1st January. It requires the feeding and watering of animals for slaughter at intervals of not more than 15 hours.
