To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the long-term unemployed is made up of persons aged over 40 years; and what has been the percentage increase in this proportion over the last three years.

In January 1993, 13 per cent. of people who were claimant unemployed for over a year were aged over 40, compared with 17 per cent. in January 1990. This represents a decrease of 4 percentage points.
