§ Mr. Campbell-SavoursTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (1) what proposals he has for the funding of flood protection work in the vicinity of Maryport harbour;
(2) if he will carry out a review of flood prevention arrangements in the vicinity of Maryport harbour.
§ Mr. CurryIn the first instance, it is for the local flood or coastal defence authority concerned to consider the need for works in its area. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food makes grant available towards the cost of schemes which are technically sound, economically worthwhile and environmentally acceptable. In this case, I understand that Allerdale district council has indicated an intention to carry out work in 1993–94 in the Maryport area but as yet no formal application for grant has been received by MAFF. The Ministry is liaising with the council and any scheme put forward will be considered against the criteria mentioned earlier.
§ Mr. Campbell-SavoursTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what moneys have been spent in West Cumbria on flood protection in the last five years.
§ Mr. CurryIn the last five years, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has grant aided some £4.7 million of capital expenditure incurred by local authorities and by the National Rivers Authority on flood defence and coast protection schemes in West Cumbria.
