To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total of new lettings made by housing associations in England for each year since 1979; and what proportion of new lettings were made to tenants receiving housing benefits.

Information on the number of housing association lettings in England is available from 1988–89, and information on lettings to tenants qualifying for housing benefit from 1990–91. The information is as follows:
