HC Deb 10 March 1993 vol 220 cc606-7W
Ms Primarolo

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the consultant to patient ratio in each EC country.

Dr. Mawhinney

Data on the number of practising physicians per 1,000 of population for all countries in the EC are available from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This covers all qualified doctors. Data specifically about consultants are not available.

The table gives the available information:

Number
United Kingdom 1.4
France 2.6
Germany 2.9
Belgium 3.3
Netherlands 2.4
Italy 11.3
Spain 3.6
Luxembourg 1.9
Portugal 2.7
Denmark 2.7
Greece 3.2
Ireland 1.5
11 Hospital doctors only.

The OECD does not guarantee consistency of information between member states. The data are not directly comparable as training, career structure and nomenclature of medical staff and the organisational structure of health services vary greatly between the states.

Data on consultant-to-patient ratios in other EC countries are not available.
