To ask the Secretary of State for Education if he will make a statement about pupil-teacher ratios in(a) primary schools, (b) secondary schools and (c) all schools for each of the last three years for which figures are available.

Mr. Forth

Information on pupil-teacher ratios in maintained schools in England in 1990, 1991 and 1992 is shown in the table. The latest pupil-teacher ratios are all significantly lower than those recorded in 1979. Further information on this topic can be found in "Statistical Bulletin 1/93", copies of which are in the Library.
