§ Mrs. GillanTo ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what representations he has received about the provision of teletext subtitling for the deaf by independent television companies since 1 January; and if he will seek to introduce arrangements to transfer to his Department responsibility for monitoring such provision.
§ Mr. BrookeBoth hon. Members and members of the public have written to me about the provision of subtitling services for the deaf. I understand that the problems at the beginning of the year have now been resolved. The Independent Television Commission is responsible for monitoring these services and I see no need to change this arrangement, which was established by the Broadcasting Act 1990.
