HL Deb 08 March 1993 vol 543 c49WA
Lord Sefton of Garston

asked Her Majesty's Government: What was the total cost to public funds of: (i) the London Docklands Development Corporation to the last convenient date; (ii) the Merseyside Urban Development Corporation over the same period.

Lord Strathclyde

At 31st January 1993 the total amount of public funds which had been paid to the London Docklands Development Corporation was £1,493 million; the total amount of public funds paid to the Merseyside Development Corporation over the same period was £307.5 million.

Lord Sefton of Garston

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate for the number of new jobs created by: (i) the London Docklands Development Corporation and; (ii) the Merseyside Urban Development Corporation, excluding construction jobs in both cases; and how many of these jobs have been transferred from other sites.

Lord Strathclyde

Urban development corporations undertake periodic surveys of the net gain in jobs in their designated areas after taking account of job losses. The net increase in employment in the London Docklands Urban Development Area at June 1992 is provisionally estimated at 22,000 jobs. The equivalent figure for Merseyside Development Corporation, at March 1992 was 2,000 jobs. These figures exclude construction jobs. Information on the number of jobs transferred from other sites is not available.

Lord Sefton of Garston

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many times the Audit Commission has reported on the London Docklands Development Corporation and the Merseyside Urban Development Corporation and on what dates; and on how many occasions and when it responded to the Commission.

Lord Strathclyde

The Audit Commission has no locus in the affairs of urban development corporations. The National Audit Office last reported on the London Docklands and Merseyside Development Corporations in 1989.
