To ask the President of the Board of Trade what plans he has to encourage further competition in the gas industry.

My right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade has referred the markets on gas supply, gas transportation and storage to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

We shall consider what steps should be taken to encourage further competition in the light of its report.
