Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) what assessment he has made of the defence implications of the Chilean Government's stockpile of chemical weapons;

(2)what assessment he has made of the defence implications of Egyptian research focusing on pathogenic micro-organisms and dangerous disease-bearing agents;

(3)what assessment he has made of the defence implications of the Iranian sarin and mustard gas producing capability;

(4)what assessment he has made of the defence implications of the development of biological weapons including anthrax, cholera, bubonic plague and smallpox by North Korea.

Increased proliferation of chemical and biological weapons has both international and regional security implications. We continue to keep the situation under review and the United Kingdom is determined to play a full part, through existing international fora, in controlling the proliferation of such weapons.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what assessment he has made of the the level of Libyan stocks of sarin, mustard gas and phosgene.

We are aware that Libya has had the capability to produce mustard and nerve agents since the late 1908s.
