HC Deb 08 March 1993 vol 220 cc452-3W
Mr. Meacher

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commowealth Affairs what was the level of British aid to Angola for each year since 1989; and if Her Majesty's Government will provide assistance to the Angolan Government in the current year to entrench democracy in Angola.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The level of United Kingdom gross bilateral aid to Angola for each financial year since 1989 was as follows:

£million
1989–90 0.731
1990–91 1.530
1991–92 1.278

In 1992–93, in addition to our regular programme, we provided landrovers and paid for two election observers at a cost of £273,000, as part of the international effort towards the election process. We also provided accommodation and training for the new unified army at a cost of £3 million from non-ODA votes.

The widespread hostilities which followed the elections has made it difficult to make plans for future aid to the country. We will however consider appropriate assistance when the security situation improves.
