HC Deb 03 March 1993 vol 220 c210W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people in the United Kingdom have been registered unemployed for more than five years; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. McLoughlin

In January 1993 in the United Kingdom, there were 118,300 claimants who had been unemployed for more than five years. This represents a fall of 158,270, or 57 per cent., from the peak level in July 1987.
