To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many hospitals in England have spinal injuries units; which regions they are in; how many patients they treat a year; what the cost was per patient; and how many beds there are in each unit.

There are eight spinal units located in the following regions: Northern; Yorkshire; Trent; North East Thames; Oxford; Wessex; West Midlands; and Mersey. The remaining information is not held centrally in the form requested. Reported activity levels are available for 1991–92 as shown in the table. The total cost of the service in that year was £22.3 million.
