To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many service personnel currently serving in(a) Bosnia and (b) Northern Ireland have been issued with compulsory redundancy notices; and if he will make a statement.

Eight Army officers currently serving in the former Yugoslavia and 36 Army officers currently serving in Northern Ireland were notified on 25 February that they had been selected for compulsory redundancy. Personnel selected for compulsory redundancy will leave the Army by 1 March 1994 and those serving overseas may apply to spend their last six months in the United Kingdom. No shore-based naval personnel, or RAF personnel, currently serving in the former Yugoslavia or Northern Ireland have been selected for compulsory redundancy.
