HC Deb 30 June 1993 vol 227 c526W
Mr. Richards

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many cases of campylobacter-induced illnesses have been recorded in Clwyd in each year since 1987; and what measures are being taken to reduce the risk of exposure to this illness.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

The data requested are given in the following table:

Numbers
1987 291
1988 251
1989 330
1990 315
1991 321
1992 356

The Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food has been considering what measures could be taken to reduce the incidence of campylobacter infection, and is due to present an interim report to Health and Agriculture Ministers shortly. A further report on campylobacter will be produced when the results of surveillance and research work recommended in the report are available.

General government advice about food hygiene and avoidance of cross-infection is relevant to campylobacter. Note: Figures given are laboratory reports of campylobacter reported to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre of the Public Health Laboratory Service by laboratories in Clwyd.
