HL Deb 30 June 1993 vol 547 cc33-4WA
Lord Morris

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which services are provided to the public by the British Railways Board ancillary to the carriage of goods and passengers; and under what powers they are carried on.

The Earl of Caithness

The British Railways Board provides a wide range of ancillary services, including policing, car parking, passenger comfort racilities and details of services, fares and facilities. The involvement of the private sector has also helped the board to develop station retail and catering outlets and on-board catering facilities. The Passenger's Charter, published by the board in March 1992, sets out its commitment to provide a high quality of service for its customers. Section 3 of the Transport Act 1962 places a duty on the board to provide railway services in Great Britain and such other services and facilities as appear to be expedient, having clue regard to efficiency, economy and safety of operation.
