§ Mr. Chris SmithTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is her Department's policy on the purchase and use of(a) recycled paper, (b) low-energy light bulbs, (c) tropical hardwoods, (d) peat and (e) cars with catalytic converters.
§ Mr. JackIt is the Department's general policy to give preference to the use of renewable natural resources, subject only to value for money and practical considerations. Non-renewable natural resources are used with care and economy when the use of natural renewable resources is not possible.
With regard to the specific items listed, the Ministry:
- (a) currently purchases recycled paper and paper products, provided they are fit for the purpose;
- (b) has already converted many of its sites to low energy or reflector-lights as part of an ongoing energy efficiency programme;
- (c) aims to purchase and use hardwoods which are from renewable sources only;
- (d) uses peat alternatives wherever possible, the sole exception being for experimental purposes where peat is a comparative treatment;
- (e) has a policy of purchasing cars fitted with catalytic converters.
