§ Mr. HanleyThe operation of the joint forces headquarters—JFHQ—during Operation Granby was reviewed during the assessment of lessons from the operation. The concept of establishing for major operations a tri-service, in-theatre operational headquarters, and its relationship with the joint headquarters and Ministry of Defence in the United Kingdom, were endorsed. Other lessons included the importance during peacetime of the effective training and exercising of the joint forces operational staff who form the core of the JFHQ, and the need for early deployment of the JFHQ should it become apparent that an operation would require the substantial involvement of more than one of the three services.
