Lord Archer of Weston-Super-Mare

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many abattoirs in the United Kingdom have been closed in the last 12 months because of new European regulations.

The Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Earl Howe)

Following implementation of the EC Fresh Meat Directive in the United Kingdom, 10 abattoirs have been refused licenses and will therefore be required to cease trading, subject to the outcome of any appeal to the Meat Hygiene Appeals Tribunal.
