To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate he has of the number of pensioners who own their own homes and have repaid their mortgage.

In 1989, the latest year for which figures are available, over half of all pensioners owned their own homes, Of these, 94 per cent—or 3.5 million—owned their own homes outright with no mortgage commitments.
