To ask the President of the Board of Trade what is his Department's latest estimate of total electricity generating capacity for the year 2000.

The Department does not prepare estimates of future generating capacity. The National Grid Company is required by its licence to prepare each year a statement known as the seven-year statement. The most recent statement includes an assessment of electricity demand up to the year 2000 and several scenarios of generation capacity.
