HC Deb 21 June 1993 vol 227 cc44-5W
21. Mr. Sweeney

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the awards by the Tidy Britain Group to Welsh resorts; and what steps are being taken to reduce sewage pollution on Welsh beaches which have failed to comply with mandatory EC coliform standards.

Mr. Gwilym Jones

Over 90 per cent. of beaches nominated by Welsh local authorities were credited with national seaside awards by the Tidy Britain Group. This is a significant increase over the number of awards made last year and represents a substantial achievement requiring exacting standards of water quality and beach management.

The large majority of bathing waters in Wales identified under the European Commission bathing waters directive already meet the directive's mandatory standards. A major investment programme is in hand by Dwn Cymru, most of which will be in place by the end of 1995, to enable all designated bathing waters in Wales regularly to meet these standards.
