HL Deb 15 June 1993 vol 546 cc75-6WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Further to their answer of 20th May, H.L. WA cols. 99–100, whether they accept that in the planning of research the interests of the humanities may not be identical to those of other subjects, and, in the absence of a humanities research council, how they propose that those interests should be heard.

The Minister of State, Department for Education (Baroness Blatch)

The nature of research in the humanities is one reason why the Government decided to establish support arrangements different from those appropriate in the sciences. The British Academy speaks effectively for the interests of the humanities community, and the Higher Education Funding Councils are also well placed to do so.
