HC Deb 14 June 1993 vol 226 cc445-6W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what steps is he taking to prevent the entry into the United Kingdom of visitors from Turkish Cyprus who have no valid or internationally recognised travel documents;

(2) what steps he is taking to prevent illegal travel documents issued by the Turkish Cypriot authorities being used for travel between Cyprus or Turkey and the United Kingdom.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The territorial entity calling itself the Turkish republic of northern Cyprus is not recognised by the United Kingdom and the travel documents which it issues are not accepted by the United Kingdom as valid travel documents. It is our present practice, however, to regard such documents as providing satisfactory evidence of identity and Cypriot citizenship, so that Cypriot citizens living in northern Cyprus are not on that ground prevented from entering the United Kingdom, provided that the other requirements of the immigration rules are met.
