HC Deb 14 June 1993 vol 226 c438W
Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what assessment he has made of the success of Operation Bumblebee in the London borough of Newham; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Charles Wardle

Operation Bumblebee, the Metropolitan police service's campaign against burglary, was extended to all its areas, including that covering the London borough of Newham, on 1 June 1993. It is too early to assess its success. However, 40 premises have already been searched and 22 arrests have been made within the borough. It would seem that the success of the operation in drawing on the support of local people, is likely to be repeated in Newham as it has been elsewhere in London.
