HC Deb 14 June 1993 vol 226 c434W
Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects the quota of 1,0000 ex-detainees to be accepted from prison camps in Bosnia, together with their families/dependants, to be reached.

Mr. Charles Wardle

No estimate can be given. The rate of arrival in the United Kingdom is dependent on the rate of referral by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The referral rate is in turn affected by the rate at which releases can be negotiated by the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the international organisations' ability to transport dependants across difficult and dangerous areas in Bosnia to Croatia.

Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what official monitoring is taking place at the transit camp in Karlovac, Bosnia, of the processing of ex-detainees' applications to come to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The arrangements for the protection, accommodation, screening and monitoring of former detainees at the transit camp in Karlovac, Croatia, are the responsibility of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The UNHCR is in regular contact with the British embassy in Zagreb but there is no official United Kingdom representation at the camp.
