To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has of the extent of fraud in the taxation system; and what steps he is proposing to take to combat it.

[holding answer 10 June 1993]: Reliable estimates of the extent of tax fraud are not available. But the hon. Member may wish to consult the chapter entitled "Deterring And Tackling Non-Compliance" in the latest annual report of the Board of Inland Revenue.
