HC Deb 11 June 1993 vol 226 cc379-80W
Ms Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what surveys have been conducted into the links between air quality, road traffic and pollution.

Mr. Key

Air quality is monitored across a range of sites and the Department of the Environment issues daily bulletins which provide information on ozone, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide.

A calculation of emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, lead and black smoke from road transport is published annually in "Transport Statistics Great Britain".

Details of emissions from the transport sector and Government action to limit them can be found in the memorandum submited to the Royal Commission on environmental pollution by the Departments of the Environment and of Transport. A copy of this memorandum has been placed in the Library.

The quality of urban air review group—QUARG—a group of independent experts, published a report on urban air quality in January 1993 which examines the effect of road traffic on air pollution and future trends. A copy of this report has been placed in the Library.
