To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proportion of the United Kingdom is now designated as environmentally sensitive areas.

Just over 9 per cent. of agricultural land in the United Kingdom is now designated under the environmentally sensitive areas scheme.

The Government have announced proposals for further designations which together are expected to bring the total area covered to approximately 15 per cent. by the end of the year.
