Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what steps he is taking to implement the recommendations for more satisfactory cost-effective compliance with Council directive 85/337/EEC contained in COM (93) 28 final—EC Cons Doc 5975/93;

(2) if he will place in the Library a copy of his Department's report to the European Parliament and Council on the application and effectiveness of EC directive 85/337.

[holding answer 7 June 1993]: The Government has made no report to the European Parliament or Council on the application and effectiveness of directive 85/337/EEC. The European Commission has recently submitted such a report in COM (93) 28 final. A memorandum on that document has been submitted by my noble Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Environment and placed in the Library of the House
