Mr. Callaghan

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the proportion of police to public in the north-west region; and what is the comparative figure for the rest of England and Wales.

In the north-west inspectorial region, which consists of the Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Merseyside and North Wales police forces, there is an average of one officer to 386 people. The comparable figure for the rest of England and Wales is 1:404.
