§ Mr. LlwydTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations the Government will now undertake to the United Nations in relation to repeated violations of United Nations resolutions by the Iraqi Government; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggIraq continues flagrantly to defy the United Nation's authority across the board, including the mandatory requirements of UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 687, which established the ceasefire and UNSCR 688, which condemns the repression of the Iraqi civilian population in many parts of Iraq.
We raise Iraqi violations of UNSCRS at the United Nations on every suitable occasion. At the 13th review of economic sanctions by the Security Council on 24 May, the United Kingdom Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sir David Hannay, listed areas of Iraq's non-compliance with the relevant UNSCRs. The Security 84W Council concluded once more that there were no grounds for the lifting or the easing of sanctions against Iraq. We will continue to insist that sanctions should not be lifted until Iraq complies fully with all the relevant UNSCRs.
§ Mr. CorbettTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he proposes to take in the UN Security Council following the attack by Iranian fighter jets on the territory of Iraq on 25 May.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggWe have expressed our serious concern to the Iranian authorities at Iran's air-raids inside Iraq. The UN Security Council is permanently seized of this issue as part of the process of implementing Security Council Resolution 598 which laid down the terms of the ceasefire at the end of the Iran/Iraq war in 1988.
