HL Deb 07 June 1993 vol 546 cc45-6WA
Baroness Brigstocke

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What were the percentages for each department within each university and polytechnic, of applicants accepted on first degree courses in autumn 1991 as a result of using the University Central Council on Admissions and Polytechnic Central Admissions System clearing procedures.

Baroness Blatch

Details for individual institutions and departments are not held centrally.

In 1991, 117,866 people applied for entry to first degree courses through the University Central Council on Admissions; of these 71,370 (65 per cent. of all admissions to universities) were accepted through clearing procedures. In the same year, 227,152 people applied for entry to first degree and HND courses through the Polytechnic Central Admissions System and 75,650 acceptances (56 per cent. of all admissions to polytechnics and colleges) to first degree courses were made through clearing procedures.
