HC Deb 07 June 1993 vol 226 c94W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what changes he proposes in respect of policy towards Belize following recent developments in Guatemala; and if he will make a statement on policy towards Guatemala.

Mr. Garel-Jones

Our policy towards Belize remains unchanged. As regards the British garrison in Belize, I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Bosworth (Mr. Tredinnick) on 13 May at column561. We are following closely current developments in Guatemala. As we and our European partners made clear in an EC statement on 27 May, we view the current situation in Guatemala with concern, and call for an early return to the democratic process.

Mr. Wareing

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans he has to visit Belize to discuss recent political changes in neighbouring Guatemala with the Prime Minister of Belize.

Mr. Garel-Jones

Neither my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs nor I have any plans to visit Belize at present. Our High Commissioner in Belmopan is, of course, in close touch with the Belize authorities, and we look forward to seeing the Belizean Prime Minister in London shortly.
