To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people in the east midlands have been unemployed for a year or longer.

Miss Widdecombe

In April 1993 and on the unadjusted basis, 65,699 claimants had been unemployed for over a year in the east midlands region.

In winter 1992–93, also on the unadjusted basis, the number unemployed over a year according to the International Labour Organisation definition stood at 73,000.
