HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 cc833-4W
Ms Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many(a) orthopaedic trauma operations and (b) trauma operations were performed in England in each year since 1990.

Mr. Sackville

I will write to the hon. Member.

1996. Ms Lynne

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many major trauma units are in operation in England; and what is the projected budget for trauma in(a) 1994, (b) 1995 and (c)

Mr. Sackville

The Department of Health has been funding a pilot trauma centre at the North Staffordshire hospital centre national health service trust since 1990. The project is being evaluated by the medical care research unit in the university of Sheffield. Its report is expected before the end of 1994. Decisions on the future strategy for dealing with patients with major injuries will be taken in the light of this work.

Projected budgets for trauma are not available centrally. Individual health authorities are funded on the basis of their resident populations and it is a matter for them to determine the level of funding needed to secure a comprehensive range of health services, including the treatment of trauma, for their residents.
