HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 c917W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secetary of State for Transport what action is currently undertaken by his Department to monitor tanker movements in dangerous sea passages.

Mr. Norris

The United Kingdom Chamber of Shipping, in consultation with the Department, developed an interim voluntary code for the routeing of tankers around the United Kingdom coast, which includes recommendations for reporting their movements to coastguard stations in sensitive areas. It is anticipated that the International Maritime Organisation's assembly will formally adopt the reporting proposals in the autumn.
