Dr. Godman

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many of(a) consultant paediatricians and (b) senior registrars specialising in paediatrics currently employed by each of the health boards were trained in (i) Scotland, (ii) the United Kingdom, (iii) other European Community countries and (iv) countries outwith the EC.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 26 July 1993]: The information is set out in the table.

Notes:

1. Paediatric specialties include medical paediatrics, surgical paediatrics and community child health.

2. Information collected centrally records only the main specialty of a doctor. No information is therefore available on the number of doctors who work in paediatrics but for whom this specialty constitutes an area of 'special interest' (second specialty).

Dr. Godman

To ask Secretary of State for Scotland how many vacant posts of consultant paediatricians have been notified by each of the health boards in each of the past five years; on average how long it takes to fill such posts; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Stewart

[holding answer 26 July 1993]: Information on vacant posts is available centrally only if an established post has been vacant for a period of at least six months during the year ending 30 September. For the years ending September 1989 to September 1992, only one such vacancy for consultant paediatrician was notified; it was in Greater Glasgow health board in the year ending 30 September 1991. No information is available centrally for the year ending 30 September 1988.
