HC Deb 27 July 1993 vol 229 c855W
Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average sentence actually served by(a) men and (b) women sentenced to life imprisonment.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

According to the records held centrally, which are approximate, the average time served under sentence in Prison Service establishments by life sentenced prisoners first released on licence in 1992 was 13.2 years for males and 12.6 years for females. These figures are provisional and may be subject to revision at a later date.

Figures are published annually, but not split by sex, in "Prison Statistics England and Wales", table 8.5 of the volume for 1991, Cm 2157.
