HC Deb 26 July 1993 vol 229 c595W
Mr. Wareing

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what requests have been received from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to release frozen funds from banking institutions in London for the purpose of purchasing medical supplies; how many of these requests have been granted; how many have been denied; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nelson

The information requested is not readily available. The Bank of England, which administers financial sanctions on behalf of Her Majesty's Treasury, has given delegated authority to individual banks to release funds in respect of the export of humanitarian goods to Serbia and Montenegro from the United Kingdom, provided that a licence has been issued by the Department of Trade and Industry and that a letter of authorisation has been issued by the United Nations sanctions committee.
