Mr. Trotter

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether Swan Hunter can compete for future Royal Navy refits.

Mr. Aitken

Swan Hunter in Receivership will be eligible to compete for unallocated RN refits subject to the usual requirements in respect of financial status, facilities, resources and qualifications.

Mr. Trotter

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will now arrange for the refit of a destroyer or frigate to be put out to competitive tender.

Mr. Aitken

We plan to invite tenders for the refit of HMS Birmingham, a type 42 destroyer, in the near future
