HC Deb 26 July 1993 vol 229 cc691-2W
Mr. Dafis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make it his policy to establish minimum room size standards for bed-and-breakfast accommodation used to house homeless people.

Sir George Young

The homelessness code of guidance for local authorities—Third edition—advises that bed-and-breakfast accommodation should be used only as a last resort, and that care should be taken in ensuring that all forms of temporary accommodation meet acceptable standards. The number of homeless households placed in bed-and-breakfast accommodation has reduced significantly over the last 12 months, and now accounts for only a small proportion of those placed in temporary accommodation.
