§ Mr. MillerTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish details of the public transport schemes currently being assessed for the Wirral-North Wales corridor as part of the public transport initiatives contained in his answer of 24 May,Official Report, column 418.
§ Mr. FreemanImprovements to public transport will in many cases be the responsibility of the operators concerned; but it is open to local authorities to bring forward proposals for public transport improvements in their area. The Government can assist by making resources available to local authorities where appropriate. For example, we have made £6.4 million available to Merseyside PTA and Cheshire county council for railway electrification between Hooton, Chester and Ellesmere Port; £2.2 million to Merseyside PTA in 1993–94 for city challenge schemes some of which are in Wirral; and £300,000 to Wirral borough council in 1993–94 for bus priority measures. Local authorities have been invited to put forward further proposals in their transport policies and programmes.
