Mr. Milburn

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many lone parents there are in Darlington; and how many and what proportion of income support claimants are lone parents in Darlington.

Mr. Burt

A provisional estimate of the number of lone parent families in the local government district of Darlington in 1991 is 3000.1

Data on the number of lone parent families in receipt of income support in individual locations are not available. However, the total number of lone parents on income support in Great Britain in 1992 was 985,0002, representing 19 per cent. of all income support claimants.
