Mr. David Marshall

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how many part-worn tyres have been imported into Great Britain in the last year for which figures are available; which countries they have come from; what checks are made as to their fitness for use; how sub-standard ones are disposed of; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. McLoughlin

In 1992 the United Kingdom imported 10,900 metric tonnes of used tyres, worth £5.4 million. The countries from which they were imported are given in the table. Policy on their fitness for use and disposal are matters for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Transport.
