§ Sir Terence HigginsTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport who is paying for the alteration to the road layout on the A27 near Worthing in relation to the Sainsbury store; what assessment he has made of the extent to which this scheme will reduce the size of the lay by in front of the small shops opposite; and what proposals he has to stop this happening or compensate the shop owners affected.
§ Mr. KeyThe full cost of these highway alterations, and the full cost of satisfying any valid claims made under part 1 of the Land Compensation Act 1973 arising from the execution of the works, will be met by J Sainsbury plc.
Regrettably, the roadworks have reduced the length of the layby on the A27 by Sompting Road. My Department's agents have now instructed the contractor to restore the layby to its former size as soon as practicable.
