However, according to the 1987 and 1991 censuses of employment, in 1987 in the manufacturing sector there were 4,900 males employed in the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney constituency and 32,700 in Mid Glamorgan. The corresponding figures for 1991 were 4,600 and 31,500.
