HC Deb 13 July 1993 vol 228 c441W
Mr. Gill

To ask the Secretary of State for Education how many young people are currently resident in special schools; and what is the estimated annual cost.

Mr. Forth

The latest figures are for January 1992. A total of 11,762 pupils were then resident in maintained and non-maintained special schools in England. The total of pupils with special needs resident in independent schools is not collected centrally.

The annual cost of residential placements in special schools is not collected centrally.
