HL Deb 13 July 1993 vol 548 c5WA
Lord Spens

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether judgments in the European Court of Human Rights have any force in United Kingdom law.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights do not have binding force under the domestic law of the United Kingdom. However, under Article 53 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the UK must abide by any decision of the Court in any case to which it is party. This is a binding obligation under international law, with which it is the policy of the Government always to comply.
